- Interior Design has become one of the most popular professions among artistically inclined people who have the talent to transform the insides of a home, office or building. An interior is the inside space within any enclosure, and interior design is all about changing that space to become a home, office, play room, class room, hotel or restaurant.
The fundamental principle of interior design is aesthetic appeal. It is a vast field that envelops aspects of architecture, product knowledge and design, environmental psychology, and traditional rules of decorating places that are indoors. The interior design of a house would mean designing every part of the house including kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, verandah terrace and so on. An interior designer is one who has spent years qualifying for a professional course including drafting, graphics, illustration and visualization, building and mechanical systems and so on. All these subjects provide the designer with the technical expertise for a designing job. It helps the designer decide what structural changes can be made and which walls can bear weight and so on.
The interior design of a residential unit is a statement of the taste of the homeowner and bears the stamp of the designer, as both have to work closely to create the warm, inviting and comfortable private domain.
Interiors have changed in style, structure and content over the years, and the present generation prefers modern hi-tech homes with warmth, color, brightness and chic accessories. The present trend relates to open spaces, freedom of movement, and colors and textures are used to make a design statement more than ornamental décor. The mode is functional and simplicity considered sophisticated. Straight lines have replaced curves; heavy frills and add-ons have been replaced by lighter ones. The extensive use of glass makes the outdoors appear to be indoors, adding brightness and bringing a sense of freedom. Interior design today also incorporates some replicas of the olden days, but those that can merge with the modern accessories in the rest of the house. Practicality in terms of use and maintenance are also key considerations.
Interior designs vary from place to place and the contrast is quite stark when one compares rural and urban homes, developed and under-developed countries, between a rich man’s home and that of someone not so rich. However, one does not have to be rich to have a beautiful home, as there is lots of potential to create beauty with limited means. All that one needs is some knowledge of interior design and this can be gathered from the Internet.
